The weather was predicted to be great and the current was 'supposed' to be in our favor, moving the boat along rather than going against us. We left later in the day, around noon. What we didn't know was that a significant rain had fallen north of us and it was swiftly flowing down the Hudson. We had steady winds of 20+ knots with gust to 30 - that's windy in a boat, but manageable. It was also Father's Day and many marinas were having events and therefore full. It is also undesirable to anchor on the Hudson.
All ended well with us stopping at a free city wall in a restored section of Troy, NY. The current kept up its pace of 5+knots all night. We met the boat, Surveyor One as he helped us tie up at the wall.
The next morning was our first real lock, the Troy Federal lock, about 2 miles from where we had spent the night.
Next, King drove the boat into the lock and positioned it next to the wall. My job was to wrap the line around the pole and hold the boat. The lock master lets the water come into the lock and when it was full, we drove out. I'm happy celebrating my birthday with a successful lock through.
